When choosing a location for your vegetable garden, it is best to get rid of the old idea that a garden "patch" must be an ugly area around the house. When carefully planned, carefully planted and meticulously cared for, it becomes a beautiful and harmonious feature of the overall scheme, creating a comfortable, homely feeling that shrubs, borders or flower beds could never produce. It can give you an atmosphere.

The ideal garden soil is a "rich, sandy loam."

With this fact in mind, you won't feel restricted to any part of your property just because you can't see it behind the barn or garage. For an average medium-sized location, there aren't many landing options. You're going to have to take what you can get and do the best you can with it. But when it comes to exposure first and convenience second, you probably have quite a few options. 

All things being equal, choose a location that is close and easy to access. It may seem that a difference of a few hundred meters means nothing, but it mainly depends on the free time to work in the garden, admire it and grow many vegetables, the latter is almost as important as the first. The issue of convenient access will become much more important than initially thought. 

You won't fully understand what this means until you make dozens of time-consuming trips to retrieve forgotten seeds or tools, or get your feet wet walking through dewy grass.

Exposure

But the first thing to consider when choosing a location that will bring you happiness and delicious vegetables all summer long, or even for years, is exposure. Find a plot that slopes slightly to the south or east and choose the "earliest" location that receives sunlight early and retains it until late, and that is out of direct contact with cold north and northeast winds. 

Your garden will look great if an old building or fence protects it from this direction. Because starting early is a huge factor in your success. If it is not already protected, installing a board fence or a hedge of evergreen shrubs or trees will greatly increase its usefulness. Hobbyists completely underestimate the importance of having such protection and shelter.

Soil

You probably can't find ideal ready-made garden soil anywhere in your house. However, all but the worst soils can achieve very high productivity, especially in small areas such as those required in home gardens. 

Large tracts of soil that are almost pure sand, or very heavy, muddy soils that have remained uncultivated for centuries, are frequently cultivated in just a few years and produced commercially in large quantities each year. 

They are harvested. So don't be discouraged about your soil. It is much more important to treat it properly, and a garden plot with average, degraded or "never tilled" soil is more important than the richer areas that will grow with average growing methods. It also produces a much larger harvest for the energetic and careful gardener.
